3 in 1 – The Columbia Bugaboo Interchange Jacket
When Columbia Sportswear launched the Bugaboo Interchange in 1986 it instantly became a massive hit and played a huge role in 90s streetwear and urban culture. Columbia’s prominent role in street & hip hop culture to this day is deeply tied into the early success of the Bugaboo Jacket. Originally designed for North American ski slopes it found its way onto the streets of New York in the 1990s thanks to the revolutionary 3-in-1 layering system, which allowed shell and fleece liner to be worn separately, essentially making this two jackets for the price of one.
In contrast to other parkas the Bugaboo Interchange was the first multi-seasonal product which could be worn throughout the whole year. Especially New Yorkers who experience blasting hot summers, freezing cold winters and everything in between, understood the true value of the jacket.
With the option to wear the shell in spring, fleece lining in the fall and the complete jacket in winter this jacket changed streetwear like no other product. Notably popular among inner city youth this jacket became the must-have fashion item in NYC high schools and basketball courts in the early 90s.
